Cyanotype on paper, tannins extracted from tree bark. 2023
This pair of images were shot on medium format film, and show the same part of the same tree. The first cyanotype is left untreated, and the second has undergone a toning process. Bark collected from the tree itself is collected, ground, and boiled to leech tannins, a potent dye. Then, the print is bleached and soaked in the tannin bath, where the color binds to the print. In this way the image of the tree is preserved in the stable blue print, and the material of the tree is bound to its twin.
