Communication Disco
Wood, dragger net, paracord, chain, fishing line, mirror, single channel responsive video, stereo audio. 2022
An installation at Brown University, December 2022. Consists of an audio-responsive projection shown through a mirror-shard chandelier, and includes an ambient soundtrack. The piece was meant to encourage audience participation.
I constructed the chandelier using fishing line, sanded-down mirror shards, wood, and a section of dragger net. These nets are often used on fishing boats, and are one of the most common ways that undersea fiber optic cables are damaged.
This piece was inspired by network disruption, with each material representing the infrastructure of the internet, including our exploitation of natural resources. The chandelier literally disrupts communication between users and the piece, and mistranscriptions from the responsive script enhance this effect.
