Cyanotype on paper, tannins from tree bark and acorns. 2023

These cyanotypes show three trees in varying stages of decay. The differing tonalities, fading from a rich brown to a pale orange, arise from the toning process. Natural materials are taken from each of the trees, and tannins extracted from them replace the typical blue tone of a cyanotype. As the life fades from the trees, so too, does the color produced by their material. And yet, a part of them lives on, chemically bound to their own likenesses.
